Is Chiropractic Safe During Pregnancy?

For most healthy pregnancies, chiropractic care is considered a low-risk option when it's adapted for pregnancy and provided by a chiropractor with prenatal training. That means gentle techniques, supportive positioning, and no direct pressure on your belly. It also means your chiropractor should know when care isn't the right choice.

I'm Dr. Jennifer Gordon, a Webster Technique certified chiropractor (through the ICPA) and Spinning Babies Aware Practitioner at Taproot Chiropractic in Temecula. Here's how prenatal care is kept safe, and the questions worth asking before your first visit.

How Prenatal Chiropractic Care Is Adapted

Pregnancy changes your body quickly, so prenatal care changes with it. At Taproot, that looks like:

  • Side-lying positions, or face-down on pregnancy pillows designed to support your belly
  • Gentle, low-force techniques instead of high-force adjustments
  • No direct pressure on your belly
  • Care adapted to each trimester and to how you're feeling that day

Hormones like relaxin loosen your ligaments during pregnancy, which is one more reason gentle, pregnancy-specific techniques matter.

Is Chiropractic Safe in Every Trimester?

Care can be adapted for all three trimesters, including the first. Early in pregnancy, many moms come in for general comfort as their body starts to change. In the second and third trimesters, care focuses on comfort as your belly grows and your pelvis shifts, and many moms add Webster Technique care.

Research on chiropractic during pregnancy is still limited, but serious side effects appear to be rare when care is adapted for pregnancy. That's why training, gentle technique, and good communication with your birth team matter so much.

When to Avoid Chiropractic Care During Pregnancy

Chiropractic isn't right for every situation. Skip your visit and call your OB or midwife if you have:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Fluid leaking, or signs your water has broken
  • Signs of preterm labor, like regular contractions before 37 weeks
  • Sudden, severe pain in your belly or pelvis
  • A severe headache, vision changes, or sudden swelling in your face or hands

Also tell your chiropractor if your OB or midwife has diagnosed placenta previa, a placental abruption, preeclampsia, or another high-risk condition, or has advised you to limit activity. We'll adjust your care plan or pause care until you're cleared.

Should I Tell My OB or Midwife?

Yes. Let your OB or midwife know you're seeing a chiropractor, and let your chiropractor know about any precautions your birth team has given you. At Taproot, we're always happy to coordinate so everyone caring for you is on the same page.

Questions to Ask Any Prenatal Chiropractor

Wherever you go for care, it's worth asking:

  • Are you Webster certified, and through which organization?
  • How do you position pregnant patients?
  • How do you adapt care as my pregnancy progresses?
  • Will you coordinate with my OB or midwife?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?

For most healthy pregnancies, chiropractic care is considered a low-risk option when it's adapted for pregnancy and provided by a chiropractor with prenatal training. Care uses gentle techniques, supportive positioning, and no direct pressure on the belly.

Is chiropractic safe in the first trimester?

Yes, care can be adapted for the first trimester. Many moms start early for general comfort as their body begins to change. Let your OB or midwife know you're receiving chiropractic care.

Will I have to lie on my stomach?

Only if it's comfortable for you. At Taproot, you can lie on your side, or face-down on pregnancy pillows designed to support your belly so there's no direct pressure on it. We'll use whichever position feels best that day.

When should you avoid chiropractic during pregnancy?

Skip care and call your OB or midwife if you have vaginal bleeding, leaking fluid, signs of preterm labor, sudden severe pain, or a severe headache with vision changes. Tell your chiropractor about any high-risk diagnosis, such as placenta previa or preeclampsia.
